Inkaba.org - Inkaba’s Window to the World Inkaba.org’s mandate is to promote Inkaba yeAfrica, and the geosciences in general, in South Africa. The organisation was set up to effect communication with government and industry, thereby establishing continuity, visibility and a two-way transfer of ideas and recommendations. We consider this a must when managing a large project under conditions of perpetually changing economic and political boundary conditions. Inkaba.org was established in February 2007. |
In a nutshell: • Sponsored by GFZ-Potsdam• Located at HartRAO (Hartebeesthoek Radio Astronomy Observatory), an NRF Facility• Liaison between government and Inkaba science coordinators• Dovetail Inkaba scientific programme with changing national needs• Geoscience materials for teachers and educators, etc. |
| The Inkaba.org office is run by Elronah Schaap (Smit) - Operations Manager at admin@inkaba.org / www.inkaba.org . | On the German side, Dr Robert Trumbull is Inkaba’s programme representative. |

SA's DST
Participation at Shangai 2010 World Expo
The Rise of a Modern Economy – Ke Nako! SA, and, in particular DST, is playing a crucial role at the annual 2010 Shangai World Expo in China http://www.dfa.gov.za/shanghaiexpo/partshanghaiexpo.htm. The Department of International Relations and Cooperation, together with participating government departments in South Africa, has been responsible for the overall preparation of the Expo. The overall theme for the Expo is “Better Cities: Better Life” and the South African theme is “SA: The rise of a modern economy – Ke nako!” . In addition to the South African theme, there are also monthly themes to be coordinated by selected Departments. The DST (Department of Science and Technology) will capitalize on this event as a platform to market its system as a preferred destination for science and technology collaboration and projects. Currently, the DST enjoys good relations with the Ministry of Science and Technology in China and views China as one of its priority countries. This is in part, because of the number of joint research and exchange programmes being conducted between the two countries as well as its growing stature economically and in science and technology matters. The DST is inter alia representing Inkaba yeAfrica as one of their key bilateral relations programmes, focusing on the months May (opening) and October 2010 (closure). 15 000 Inkaba brochures have been designed to be distributed at this major event (a downloadable webpage copy and print ready copy is available under Publications > Popular Media on www.inkaba.org ).
QUEST (Science for South Africa) A Science for South Africa magazine published by the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) www.questsciencemagazine.co.za A Special Edition of QUEST on the International Year of Planet Earth 2008 was published during March/early April 2008. Back copies are available from the QUEST website (www.questsciencemagazine.co.za ) The International Year of Planet Earth (IYPA) in South Africa - an African idea - was co-ordinated by the IYPE Out of Africa - the South African National Committee for the IYPE, chaired by Prof. Maarten de Wit, Inkaba's SA Representative. Said Minister of Science and Technology, Dr Mosibudi Mangena in his message from South Africa for IYPE: "Only through science, robust science, the minehead of knowledge, can we appreciate where we came from, where we are and where we are heading." These words literally depicts Inkaba's goals and objectives. "And, this is Africa's great opportunity to place her unmatched heritage on the world map. This is our greatest opportunity ever to breathe life into that simple creed of freedom, 'by the people, for the people. But, let us expand on the creed: 'by the people, for the people and all other species of our time and tomorrow's time" concluded Minister Mangena. |

The NRF is the country’s key public entity responsible for supporting the development of human capacity and knowledge generation.
Close on 300 postgraduate students, mainly engaged in studies towards their Masters degrees, gathered once again, for the annual 2010 PhD Project Conference and Expo. Inkaba's accompanying exhibition showcased the opportunities for study, financial support and research for post-graduates in related Inkaba areas both in South Africa and Germany. Dr Van Jaarsveld added that the initiative aligns with the country’s National System of Innovation (NSI) and aims to position South Africa as a leader in knowledge production in all fields of scientific research, including social science, humanities, law, natural sciences and engineering.
